The only '4 on the tree' shifter I ever saw was on a co-workers 60 something diesel Mercedes Benz sedan. That was in 1973. GM did not do it (to my knowledge) The Saginaw 4 speed is not a bad transmission, BUT the Muncie is a better design. Attached is info some you may find helpful. link:

The trans has always been fine, and the only modification is a Hurst shifter. Driving the car other day, I noticed it had become very difficult to grab second gear - it almost feels like it is blocked.

I did this a couple of years ago can't find the invoice but I think the gear set was about $450 the OH kit $150. The parts are made by auto gear equipment. The gear set has the cluster, 2nd gear to balance the split and 3rd gear for the OD. The new ratios are 2.20, 1.51, 1.00, .859. Makes a 4.11 rear act like a 3.55.
